Here is the completed mosaic that was made during a course that I facilitated at Comet Children's Centre in Hackney, London. After consulting with the families and staff of Comet we decided it was important that the mosaic, which is now on view outside the entrance to the centre, should celebrate Comet Children's Centre and its activities. We agreed to highlight the gorgeous logo, the Centre's vision and ethos, its users and the environment of play, music and exploration. The hands which border the Centre are handprints of all the families and staff of Comet Children's Centre.
Over the course of six weeks the group met and made mosaic elements that were then added to a piece of MDF measuring220 x 122 cm. We made the mosaics using paper tiles that I had cut with a guillotine and we used a variety of glues and card to make our different elements. We used paint and glitter to give the mosaic further texture and depth. We looked at different mosaic techniques and practices from across the world and throughout history.
Thanks so much to all the amazing staff, children and families of Comet Children's Centre!
